Veterans Remembrance Week has officially begun, an Veterans Remembrance Week has officially begun, and what a day to start it.

I started my morning at the Brighton One Campus (@brightonmarine), where Colonel Fife and his East Boston High School ROTC (@ebhsjets) planted flags in honor of Veterans Day. I met up there with Dan Cuddy of Brighton One and Rob Santiago, Commissioner of Veterans Services for the City of Boston (@bostonvets).

We ended the day at the Honan-Allston Branch for our 4th Annual Veterans Count: Stories of Sacrifice, our Roll Call of Veterans. Families, neighbors, and veterans filled the room to honor 38 Allston-Brighton heroes, from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam.

The Gillooly family shared the story of Sgt. George S. Gillooly, killed March 27, 1944, over Wuntho, Burma, flying with the 10th Air Force's "Bridge Busters." Seven Gillooly sons served in World War II.

Bill Corrigan, 96, a Korean War veteran who diffused bombs, was with us in the room, our first Korea honoree and our only living honoree.

This year brought a special find: 1st Lt. Edward Lewis Stevens of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the last Federal officer killed in the Civil War, who fell at Boykin's Mill on April 18, 1865. His father Silas Stevens lived on Washington Street in Brighton.

Thank you to the Friends of the Honan-Allston Library, Colonel Brian Golden, and Dan Cuddy, and to Boston 250, our partners in this remembrance. Thank you to all the families and guests who came, and a special thanks to Senator Will Brownsberger (votebrownsberger) for joining us.

This remembrance began with Rita DiGesse's idea, and we carry it forward in her memory.

We look forward to marching alongside our veterans in the City of Boston Veterans Day Parade (@bostonvets) on Saturday, November 7 at 12pm, starting at the Boston Public Library on Boylston Street and marching to City Hall Plaza.

We remember them all. 🇺🇸
