The Department of Conservation and Recreation and Massachusetts Department of Transportation are beginning interim repairs on the Storrow Drive Tunnel to extend the tunnel’s lifespan until a larger rehabilitation or replacement project can take place. Phase 1 of the project began in April 2026 and is expected to continue through summer 2026, focusing on concrete repairs to the tunnel ceiling. A second phase is planned for fall 2026 and may include additional structural work as needed.
To complete the repairs safely, nightly eastbound closures of Storrow Drive and nearby lanes will take place Sunday through Thursday from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Drivers will be detoured through Cambridge and surrounding routes, including Memorial Drive, the Longfellow Bridge, and Leverett Circle. Officials say work is being scheduled during overnight off-peak hours to minimize disruptions, while accommodations will be made for major events and traffic needs throughout the project.
Built in 1950, the Storrow Drive Tunnel carries approximately 58,000 vehicles daily and has undergone several major repairs over the years. State transportation officials say these interim repairs are necessary to maintain safety and extend the tunnel’s service life while plans for a long-term rehabilitation or replacement move forward.
