The Boston Parks and Recreation Department has announced upcoming construction at McKinney Playground, including improvements to the park’s fencing, landscaping, and perimeter vegetation.
Beginning August 17, most of the park will close, while the playground and sports courts will remain temporarily open. The entire park is expected to close on September 14 and remain closed through approximately fall 2027 as construction continues.
Fence and Vegetation Improvements
The renovation will include improvements to the park’s perimeter fencing and the removal of invasive trees, shrubs, and vines that have grown along the existing fence. Targeted herbicide treatments will also be used to control invasive growth, with signage posted in treated areas.
While the removal of vegetation may initially look significant, the improvements are intended to create better visibility, air circulation, and sightlines within and around the park. New native trees will be planted in key locations to create a healthier and more sustainable park perimeter.
Notice for Park Abutters
The following properties are specifically affected by the upcoming fence and tree work:
- 52–80 Goodenough Street
- 9–45 Sanderson Place
- 40–42 Faneuil Street
The project arborist may prune branches from park trees that overhang neighboring properties when appropriate for tree health and safety.
Abutters who have a preference regarding trees along their property line should contact the project manager by August 17. Send a photograph of the tree and indicate whether you would prefer it preserved or removed to nelle.ward@boston.gov. While the Parks Department will do its best to accommodate preferences, final decisions will be based on the arborist’s recommendations and overall park safety.
Important Deadline for Abutters
By September 18, residents should remove any private fencing, materials, or other objects attached to or touching the Parks Department fence. Residents are also asked, when possible, to temporarily move belongings approximately two feet away from the shared property line to provide contractors with adequate workspace.
The Parks Department and its contractor cannot be responsible for damage to private items attached to park infrastructure or interfering with construction.
The City of Boston Parks and Recreation Department appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as these improvements get underway. The renovation will help create a safer, healthier, and more sustainable McKinney Playground for the community.
