Established in 1998, Brighton Main Streets is part of a citywide movement inspired by Main Street America’s UrbanMain Program. Since its founding, the organization has worked to cultivate a vibrant, welcoming, and pedestrian-friendly commercial district that reflects the heart of the Brighton community.

Centered along Washington Street, the district is anchored by two lively neighborhood hubs—Brighton Center and Oak Square—and is home to 150+ small businesses and independent restaurants, along with key community resources like a YMCA, two libraries, a police station, a district courthouse, and major institutions such as Boston Medical Center and Franciscan Children’s.

Brighton offers a unique blend of small-town charm and big-city convenience, attracting families, young professionals, and students alike. With its tree-lined streets, historic homes, and classic triple-deckers, this northwest Boston neighborhood is both rich in character and full of energy.

Our Mission
Brighton Main Streets is dedicated to strengthening the neighborhood’s commercial district and enhancing the overall quality of life for those who live, work, and visit here. We focus on beautifying our streets, supporting and diversifying local businesses, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment, and promoting Brighton as a destination within Boston—all while encouraging residents to shop local and invest in their community.

Brighton Main Streets is heartbroken by the tragic Brighton Main Streets is heartbroken by the tragic passing of Louisa Gag.

Louisa was a thoughtful, compassionate, and dedicated public servant who cared deeply about the people and neighborhoods of Boston. We had the privilege of working with her on the Bluebikes station project in Brighton, and throughout that collaboration she was a caring advocate who listened, brought people together, and always sought solutions that would best serve the community.

Her professionalism, kindness, and unwavering commitment to making Boston safer and more accessible left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to work with her. Her impact will continue to be felt in the streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces she helped shape.

We extend our deepest condolences to Louisa’s family, friends, colleagues at the City of Boston, and all who knew and loved her. Boston has lost an extraordinary planner, advocate, and human being far too soon.

May her memory be a lasting inspiration to all who continue the work of building a safer, more connected, and more welcoming city.

This Fourth of July, we celebrate the city where the spirit of liberty took root, where ordinary people sparked extraordinary change, and where the ideals of freedom helped shape a nation.

Here’s to 250 years of courage, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of a more perfect union. Happy Independence Day, Boston—and here’s to the generations still writing your story.

As our nation celebrates 250 years of American ind As our nation celebrates 250 years of American independence, Brighton Main Streets is proud to help tell the story of our own neighborhood’s role in the founding of our country. This week, members of Brighton Main Streets had the privilege of visiting the Massachusetts Historical Society, where we participated in a fascinating tour and lecture focused on 1776. Standing among one of the nation’s premier collections of Revolutionary-era documents—including the renowned Adams Papers—was both inspiring and educational. It reinforced the importance of preserving and sharing the stories that shaped our nation and our neighborhood. Our research is only the beginning.
We’re honored to have been awarded a Boston 250 Summer Programming and Marketing Grant from The Boston Foundation for our project, “Revolutionary Brighton: Discovering 250 Years of Community, Courage, and Change.” This funding will support a series of community programs, educational events, storytelling initiatives, walking tours, and partnerships that will bring Brighton’s rich Revolutionary history to life for residents and visitors of all ages. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing the stories of the people, places, and events that helped shape both Brighton and the birth of our nation. We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate 250 years of community, courage, and change.
Boston 250 is a public-private partnership between the City of Boston and private sector partners, including Meet Boston, State Street, The Boston Foundation, John Hancock, Eastern Bank, Liberty Mutual, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and PNC Bank. Learn more about the city’s 250th anniversary celebration at boston250.org. This acknowledgment is included in accordance with the grant guidance provided by The Boston Foundation.
Together, let’s discover why Brighton’s history is an important part of America’s story. 🇺🇸 Happy 250th, America!
